Most people are aware that obesity takes a toll on the heart health with there being a plethora of research to back it up. According to a new study, adults between ages 40 and 59 who are overweight or obese have a significantly increased risk (ranging from 21 to 85 percent higher) of developing cardiovascular disease as compared with their normal weight peers. Additionally, overweight individuals are also at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease at a young age. Being “Overweight” is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) between 25 and 29.9 or are obese (a BMI of 30 or higher). As per research, obese individuals have short shelf-lives. When talking about the connection between obesity and heart disease, it is multifaceted. Firstly, obesity increases the risk of developing many other risk factors for heart disease. Secondly, it triggers inflammatory processes that can harm the cardiovascular system and may also lead to structural and functional changes in the ticker.
Heart disease is a major cause behind the occurrence of a cardiac arrest or heart attack. A victim involved in such an emergency would require appropriate treatment for survival with the most appropriate treatment being proper application of the life-saving CPR techniques. The procedures involve chest compressions and rescue breaths. Make sure to obtain training from a certified training center such as the AHA certified CPR Columbus in Ohio. The CPR courses for healthcare providers include Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Read to know more about a “PALS class Columbus”.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support Classes- This course is required for most healthcare professionals that work with the pediatric population. Most licensed PALS providers work in operating rooms, pediatric intensive care units, emergency departments, specialized pediatric departments, pediatric facilities that provide outpatient surgery, long term skilled nursing services, sedation for dental procedures and pediatric transport. The course is a combination of video, lecture, and hands on practice.
The course fee is $299.
Connection between Obesity and the Heart:
1. Obesity increases the risk of developing other heart disease risk factors like hypertension, cholesterol abnormalities, and type 2 diabetes, etc. Apart from that, being overweight also increases the risk of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of heart-disease risk factors, including high blood pressure, low levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol, high triglyceride levels, high blood sugar levels, and a large waist circumference. The sad part is high blood pressure that’s brought on by obesity irritates plaque in the arteries and predisposes it to rupturing which can trigger myocardial infarction or a heart attack.
2. Chances of developing sleep apnea is higher for individuals who are overweight which makes for a fragmented night’s sleep.
3. Obesity is associated with hidden inflammation which increases the risk of developing atherosclerosis and the buildup of plaque in the walls of the arteries. Obesity also leads to release of substances in the blood that can make plaque rupture, which is what leads to heart attacks.
4. According to the American Heart Association, obesity raises the risk of developing atrial fibrillation, a rapid irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) of the upper chambers (atria) of the ticker that can promote the formation of blood clots thus can cause a stroke, heart failure, or other heart-related complications. The heart may also get enlarged which could be from untreated hypertension.
